Perfect timing on these, Sarah: not only was I just this hour thinking of trying some new needlepoint patterns and wondering if Renaissance designs might be fun, I am in the process of editing the _Fais d'Armes et de cheualerie_ (c. 1410), a work by Christine de Pizan that draws in part on Vegetius (in MS of course). Her discussions of the phalanx and other battle formations are easier to grasp with such diagrams (absent from my copytext, alas). Seriously, how DID they print that? Such coincidences! Thank you for this post (and indeed for them all).
